If you’ve been living your art life on smooth drawing pads and perfectly behaved sketchbooks, buckle up because the world of unusual papers is enormous, wild, and delightfully chaotic in all the best ways. Handmade papers, mulberry sheets, kraft rolls, glassine gems, charcoal paper, mineral paper… each one has its own personality, quirks, strengths, limitations, and very strong opinions about which mediums it prefers.
We’re here to show you why these hidden-texture papers deserve a spot in your studio, your sketch kit, and possibly your heart.
Handmade Paper: Organic Texture, Natural Deckles, Limitless Charm
Handmade paper is a tactile dream. Bumpy in all the right places, full of organic fibers, pulpy swirls, sometimes even petals or leaves. It immediately elevates the simplest line drawing or ink wash because the surface interacts with the medium rather than merely holding it. Pigment settles into valleys, lines soften unexpectedly, and suddenly your marks feel more alive.
Artists love handmade paper for its incredible tooth with graphite and charcoal, its soft absorbency for ink, its beautiful deckled edges for collage and bookbinding, and the fact that no two sheets are ever the same. It’s chaos, but the good kind.
Mulberry Paper: Strong, Lightweight, and Basically a Superhero
Mulberry paper is made from long plant fibers, giving it an almost magical strength despite being feather-light. It bends without breaking, resists tearing, and handles water beautifully, all while maintaining a delicate translucency that feels like drawing on a cloud.
Brush pens, ink linework, light watercolor layers, printmaking impressions, and collage accents all shine here. If you love texture but want a surface that won’t fight you, mulberry is your new best friend.
Kraft Paper: The Humble Hero of Everyday Mark-Making
Don’t underestimate kraft paper. Behind its grocery-bag exterior is a rugged, earthy, warm-toned surface that is ridiculously fun to draw and paint on. The mid-tone brown is perfect for playing with lights and darks. White gel pens, pastels, gouache, charcoal, and ink all pop like they’re performing on stage.
It’s affordable, excellent for studies and warm-ups, fabulous for gift wrap, block printing, and DIY envelopes, and a staple for collage backgrounds. Kraft paper is the friend who always shows up even when you forget to text. Reliable. Charming. Always game.
Glassine: The Unsung Hero of Artists’ Studios
If you’ve ever had a pastel piece smudge itself into oblivion, you already know glassine deserves a crown. Traditionally used to protect artwork, this smooth, translucent, grease-resistant paper is also a surprisingly fun drawing surface.
Graphite, colored pencil, ink linework, bookbinding pages, and layered collage all benefit from glassine’s slick personality. Your marks behave differently here. They glide, skate, and resist in ways that encourage experimentation. That’s the fun part.
Charcoal Paper: The Toothiest, Most Dramatic Surface in the Drawer
Charcoal paper has deep, luxurious texture. The kind that grabs onto pigment like it never wants to let go. It’s ideal for expressive, bold, high-contrast work that embraces smudging, sweeping lines, and dramatic value shifts.
It loves charcoal (obviously), soft pastels, chalk, conte, and graphite sticks. What it does not love is ultra-fine detail. This paper wants you to go big, get messy, and commit.
A Few More Papers We Can’t Not Mention
Because once you start paying attention to paper texture, it’s hard to stop. Yupo behaves more like plastic than paper, keeping pigment on the surface for wild, erasable, unpredictable effects. Masa paper combines delicate fiber texture with a waterproof backing, making it a favorite for printmakers and collage artists. Mineral paper, made from rocks instead of trees, offers a smooth, tear-resistant surface that handles water in wonderfully strange ways. Traditional fibers like hosho, kozo, unryu, and rice paper bring varying translucency, strength, and movement, each one an invitation to experiment.
Finding Your Paper (And Your Next Creative Obsession)
Here’s the thing about choosing paper: there’s no single “right” surface. There’s only the paper that sparks your curiosity, makes your tools behave in new ways, and surprises you into making marks you didn’t plan. Maybe you want buttery-smooth lines or toothy resistance. Maybe you’re layering, scraping, erasing, or collaging. Maybe you want a surface that gently guides you or one that challenges you in all the best ways. Whatever you’re craving, come chat with us. We love nothing more than helping artists explore textures, feel fibers, compare options, and discover the paper soulmate they didn’t know they were looking for. Touching, testing, and nerding out are always welcome here.
