COLOR LAB 5 Pigment Spotlight — Transparent Red Oxide

Welcome back to Color Lab, where we obsess over single pigments until we understand them at a molecular level. (Not literally. We’re nerds, not chemists. But we’re close.)

This month’s star is Transparent Red Oxide (PR101), an earthy, transparent, absolute legend of a pigment that’s been holding down painting techniques for literal millennia and somehow still doesn’t get enough respect. This is the pigment equivalent of that one bassist who makes the whole band sound better but never gets mentioned in interviews.

If you’ve ever looked at a painting and thought “how did they make those shadows so warm and glowy?” or “why do these flesh tones look so alive?” there’s a decent chance PR101 was involved. It’s the silent MVP. The underpainting king. The glaze master. The warm-dark wizard.

What Even Is Transparent Red Oxide?

Transparent Red Oxide is PR101: a synthetic iron oxide pigment that’s basically “fancy rust, but make it art supplies.” It’s a warm, earthy red-brown with a slight orange lean, and here’s the magic part: you can see through it.

Not like glass. Like stained glass. Like colored light. When you paint with PR101, especially in thin layers, it doesn’t just sit on the surface blocking everything underneath, it glows. Light passes through it, bounces off whatever’s below, and comes back through the pigment layer. This is what “transparent” actually means in paint nerd terms, and it’s why this pigment is so stupidly useful.

Iron oxide pigments have been around since cave painting days (literally 40,000+ years of track record), but modern synthetic PR101 is the refined version: lightfast, permanent, non-toxic, consistent, and completely reliable. It’s ancient technology that got a PhD.

Why PR101 Is Secretly Running Half the Paintings You Love

Transparency is a superpower. Opaque pigments cover things up. Transparent pigments layer. They build depth. They let you create shadows that feel three-dimensional instead of flat. They’re how old masters got those impossibly rich darks and glowing skin tones, not by mixing the perfect opaque color, but by layering transparent ones.

It’s warm without being obnoxious. Some reds walk into a room and demand everyone look at them. PR101 walks in, makes everyone else look better, and leaves before you realize it was even there. It adds warmth to mixes without screaming about it.

It plays well with literally everyone. Mix it with blues? Gorgeous warm darks. Mix it with yellows? Earthy oranges and terracottas. Mix it with greens? Instant sophisticated neutrals. PR101 is the friend who gets along with all your other friends and makes group dynamics better just by existing.

It’s permanent and won’t ghost you. Lightfastness rating: excellent. Permanence: rock solid. PR101 doesn’t fade, shift, or betray you twenty years later when your painting suddenly looks different. It’s the pigment equivalent of “ride or die.”

A Brief History of Humans Painting With Fancy Dirt

Iron oxide = rust = dirt = the color of literally the ground beneath your feet. Humans have been using iron oxide pigments since we figured out “hey, what if we smear colored dirt on cave walls?” (Spoiler: it worked. Those paintings are still there 40,000 years later.)

Ochres, siennas, umbers—all iron oxides. All dug out of the earth. All slightly different depending on where they came from and what else was mixed in with the iron.

PR101 is the lab-created version: standardized, consistent, and way more transparent than most natural earth pigments. It’s what you get when you take 40 millennia of “this color rules” and refine it into its most useful form.

Basically: cave painters started it, old masters perfected it, and now you get to buy it in a tube for like $8. What a time to be alive.

Swatching PR101: A Choose-Your-Own-Obsession Adventure

When you swatch Transparent Red Oxide, here’s what to geek out about:

The transparency reveal. Full strength? Rich earthy red-brown. One layer of water (or medium)? Still visible but you can see through it. Three layers of diluted glaze? Magic. Do the thing where you paint it over white and over black and watch how differently it behaves. This is the transparency science experiment. Enjoy it.

Warmth without aggression. It’s a warm pigment but it’s not trying to set anything on fire. It just… gently warms everything it touches. Like a pigment cardigan.

Staining power. Especially in watercolor, PR101 commits. Once it’s on the paper, it’s staying. This isn’t bad! It’s just information. Plan accordingly.

Tinting strength: moderate and cooperative. It won’t steamroll other pigments in a mix. It negotiates. It collaborates. Very polite pigment. We appreciate that.

Mixing PR101: A Love Language

Transparent Red Oxide speaks fluent “gets along with everyone.” Here’s what it says to other pigments:

PR101 + Ultramarine Blue: “Let’s make warm, dimensional darks that don’t look dead inside.” (This combo is chef’s kiss for underpainting and shadow work.)

PR101 + Hansa Yellow: “Terracotta! Autumn! Desert sunsets! Let’s get earthy!” (Perfect for natural color schemes and warm landscapes.)

PR101 + Sap Green: “Your green is too shouty. Let me calm that down for you.” (Neutralizes and sophisticates greens like nobody’s business. You might remember this friend from Color Lab #4.)

PR101 + Titanium White: “Soft peachy flesh tones? Muted terracotta? I got you.” (Portraiture secret weapon unlocked.)

PR101 + Phthalo Blue (or any dark): “Rich, warm darks incoming. No flatness allowed.” (Layer this into shadows and watch them glow.)

Test all of these. Make charts. Get weird with it. This pigment rewards experimentation.

How Artists Actually Use This Thing (In Real Life, Not Theory)

Underpainting (The PR101 Signature Move)

Underpainting = the foundation layer(s) you put down before your “real” painting. Many artists use an earth tone (often PR101 or something similar) because it:

  • Establishes warm mid-tones across the whole piece
  • Kills the terror of the white canvas
  • Creates visual unity (everything’s connected by that warm undertone)
  • Lets you map values without committing to final colors
  • Shows through later layers, adding warmth and depth

This is old master technique. This is contemporary realism technique. This is “if it works for 500 years, maybe there’s something to it” technique.

Glazing (Transparency’s Time to Shine)

Glazing = thin, transparent layers over dried paint. PR101 is made for this. You can:

  • Warm up passages that feel too cool
  • Deepen shadows without losing detail
  • Unify a painting by tying scattered areas together with a warm glaze
  • Add richness and complexity to colors that feel flat

The key: THIN layers. Dilute heavily. Build slowly. Let each layer dry. This is not a “slap it on thick” pigment. This is a “patience yields magic” pigment.

Flesh Tones (The Thing Portrait Painters Know)

PR101 + yellows + white = believable human skin in like three seconds. Layer it thinly over cooler undertones to add warmth where blood sits close to skin (cheeks, nose, ears, hands). It’s one of those “why does this just work” combos that makes portraiture feel less intimidating.

Sophisticated Neutrals (For When You’re Tired of Boring Gray)

Mix PR101 with complementary colors (blues, greens) and you get neutrals that feel alive. Not flat gray. Not boring beige. Complex, dimensional, “I can’t quite name this color but it’s perfect” neutrals.

The Transparency Test You Need to Do Right Now

Seriously, do this:

  1. Paint three rectangles of different colors: white, yellow, blue
  2. Let them dry completely
  3. Glaze a thin layer of diluted PR101 over half of each rectangle
  4. Lose your mind a little bit

You’ll see the base colors through the PR101 layer, but shifted — warmed, deepened, transformed. This is transparency in action. This is why this pigment is so useful. This is the light-passing-through thing we keep talking about.

Why This Matters Beyond “It’s a Nice Color”

Understanding PR101 is understanding how traditional painting actually works. Not one thick opaque layer. Multiple thin transparent and semi-transparent layers that interact with light. The glow comes from light bouncing through pigment, not from the pigment itself.

Once you get this, you start looking at paintings differently. You start seeing the layers. You start understanding technique. You start thinking “I could do that” — and you’re right, because the materials are the same.

Rembrandt had PR101’s ancestor. Vermeer had it. Caravaggio had it. Now you have it, in a more refined form, for the price of a burrito.
