If you’ve ever stood in front of a wall of pre-made stencils thinking “close, but not quite,” you already know: the stencil you actually need is the one you design yourself.
Custom stencils open up a world of possibilities — repeating patterns for gel printing, bold graphics for street art and murals, intricate details for mixed media, or just that one very specific shape you need for a project and cannot find anywhere. They’re also wildly satisfying to make, which is a bonus.
At Art Supply Center, we love a good DIY moment, especially when it means you get exactly the tool you need instead of compromising your vision. Making stencils isn’t complicated, but there are some material choices and techniques that’ll make your life significantly easier.
Step 1: Design Your Stencil (The Fun Part)
Before you cut anything, you need a design. This can be hand-drawn, digitally designed, traced from a photo, or frankensteined together from multiple sources. There are no rules except physics.
A few design considerations that’ll save you heartbreak later
Bridges are your friends. If you’re cutting letters or shapes with interior spaces (like the center of an “O” or “A”), you need bridges — little connections that hold the middle piece in place. Without them, your center falls out and you’re left with a hole-shaped regret.

Positive vs. negative space. Decide early whether you’re stenciling through the cut shape (negative stencil) or around it (positive stencil). This affects how you design and cut.

Level of detail. Intricate designs look amazing but are harder to cut and easier to tear, especially if you’re planning to reuse the stencil multiple times. If this is your first rodeo, start simpler than you think you need to.
Size matters. Tiny stencils are finicky to cut. Huge stencils are hard to stabilize and store. Aim for a size that matches both your cutting patience and your project scale.
Step 2: Choose Your Material (This Is Where It Gets Nerdy)
The material you choose depends on how you plan to use the stencil, how many times you’ll use it, and what medium you’re applying through it.

Cardstock or Chipboard
Best for: One-time or low-use stencils, quick projects, testing designs before committing to a nicer material.
Pros: Cheap, easy to cut with a craft knife or scissors, readily available.
Cons: Not durable. Absorbs paint and gets soggy fast, especially with spray paint or watery mediums. Edges can fray. If you’re planning more than a few uses, skip this and go straight to something sturdier.
Good for: Paper projects, light stamping, classroom or workshop demos, experimental designs.
Mylar (Translucent Plastic Sheeting)
Best for: Reusable stencils, detailed designs, anything involving spray paint or heavy medium application.
Pros: Durable, flexible, washable, and see-through (which is clutch for registration and alignment). Doesn’t absorb paint, so edges stay crisp use after use. Can handle solvents and water-based mediums equally well.
Cons: Requires a sharp blade and a cutting mat. Slightly harder to cut than paper, and if your knife slips, it’s harder to “fix” a plastic mistake than a paper one.
Thickness guide:
- 5 mil: Flexible, easy to cut, great for detailed work. Can bend or warp with heavy use.
- 7.5–10 mil: The sweet spot. Sturdy enough to hold its shape but still cuttable by hand.
- Thicker than 10 mil: Requires serious cutting tools. Overkill unless you’re doing industrial-level stenciling.
Good for: Gel printing, block printing, murals, outdoor projects, anything you’ll use repeatedly.
Acetate Sheets
Best for: Overhead projector nostalgia and… honestly, not much else for stenciling.
Acetate is thinner and more brittle than mylar. It can work in a pinch, but it’s not as durable and tends to crack along cut lines. If you have it on hand, sure, use it. If you’re buying material specifically for stencils, get mylar instead.
Freezer Paper
Best for: Fabric stenciling, especially if you’re using an iron-on method.
Freezer paper has a plastic coating on one side that temporarily adheres to fabric when you iron it. You cut your design, iron it onto your fabric, paint or print through it, then peel it off. It’s a one-and-done material, but it’s fantastic for crisp edges on textiles.
Good for: T-shirts, tote bags, fabric printing, block printing on cloth.
Vinyl (Contact Paper or Adhesive Vinyl)
Best for: Projects where you need the stencil to stick in place — like walls, curved surfaces, or outdoor installations.
Adhesive-backed vinyl clings to surfaces, which prevents paint bleed and makes registration easier on tricky applications. You can cut it by hand or with a vinyl cutter (if you’re fancy). The downside? It’s single-use, and removal can sometimes leave residue.
Good for: Murals, sign painting, car/bike customization, anywhere paint bleed is the enemy.
Step 3: Cut Your Stencil (Patience Is a Virtue)
Tools you’ll need
- Craft knife (X-Acto or similar): Sharp blade is non-negotiable. Dull blades tear instead of cut.
- Self-healing cutting mat: Protects your table and extends your blade life.
- Metal ruler or straight edge: For clean lines on geometric designs.
- Patience: Cannot be purchased. Must be summoned from within.
Cutting tips from people who’ve messed this up before (us)
Cut on a stable surface. Your kitchen table works. Your lap does not.
Use light pressure and multiple passes. Don’t try to cut through in one aggressive slash. Gentle, repeated cuts give you more control and cleaner edges.
Cut away from bridges. Start cuts in the middle of a shape and work outward toward connection points. This keeps bridges intact longer.
Rotate the material, not the blade. It’s easier to turn your stencil than to contort your hand into weird angles. Bonus points if you purchase a cutting mat that rotates.
Save the tiny bits. Those little interior pieces you cut out? Keep them. Sometimes you’ll want to use them as masks or positive stencils later.
Take breaks. Hand cramps are real. So is losing focus and slicing through something you meant to keep.
Step 4: Test Before You Commit
Before you spray-paint an entire mural or print 50 copies, do a test run on scrap material. This is how you catch:
- Paint bleed under edges
- Bridges that aren’t strong enough
- Registration issues
- Design elements that looked great on paper but don’t translate in practice
Testing also lets you figure out how much paint/ink is too much, how to hold or tape the stencil, and whether your material choice is actually working.
If the test fails, you can adjust before it matters. If the test succeeds, you proceed with confidence. Either way, you win.
Using Your Stencil: A Few Pro Moves
Secure it. Tape, repositionable spray adhesive, or weights keep your stencil from shifting mid-application. Shifting = blurry edges = sadness.
Less paint is more. Overloading your brush, sponge, or spray can causes bleed under the edges. Build up color in thin layers instead.
Stipple, don’t brush. If you’re using a brush, dab straight down (stippling) instead of brushing side-to-side. This keeps paint from sneaking under the stencil edge.
Peel carefully. Lift the stencil straight up, not at an angle, to avoid smudging. If you’re using a sticky material like vinyl, peel slowly.
Clean between uses. Dried paint builds up and ruins crisp edges. Wipe mylar stencils with a damp cloth or rubbing alcohol. Let them dry fully before storing.
When to Make vs. When to Buy
Make your own when:
- You need something custom or very specific
- You want full control over size and design
- You’re planning to reuse it a lot and want it exactly right
- You enjoy the process (valid reason!)
Buy pre-made when:
- You need it immediately and don’t have time to cut
- The design already exists and works for your project
- You’re experimenting and want options without committing to the labor

The Most Important Thing
A custom stencil is a tool you designed for your specific needs. It doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to work for what you’re making. Wonky bridges, slightly rough edges, and “good enough” cuts are all fine if they get the job done.

Yupo is another option for stencil material and has properties that can be quite useful especially if you are using your stencils on a gel plate.
Shelly, YES. Thank you for bringing this up because Yupo absolutely deserves a spot on that list.
For anyone reading along: Yupo is a synthetic paper (technically polypropylene) which means it’s waterproof, incredibly smooth, and paint doesn’t absorb into it at all. For gel plate printing especially, that non-absorbent surface is a huge win. Paint releases cleanly, edges stay crisp, and you can wipe it down between uses just like mylar. It’s also got a little more “give” than rigid plastic, which makes it easier to cut and maneuver on the plate.
