Mineral Paper Made from Rocks Not Trees

You read that right, made from rocks. Mineral Paper is one of those materials that sounds like science fiction until you actually touch it. Smooth, durable, and endlessly versatile, it’s made from 80% calcium carbonate (the mineral found in rocks, shells, and even pearls), which gives it a gorgeous eggshell texture and a bright white finish that makes colors pop.

It’s a total dream, equal parts eco-friendly innovation and art-making magic, and we always keep it stocked here at Art Supply Center because it’s one of those “if you know, you know” supplies.

What Makes Mineral Paper So Special

Think of it as paper 2.0. It’s technically not “paper” in the traditional sense, but it performs like one, only better in a lot of ways. Here’s why artists love it:

Made from rocks, not trees – It’s a great sustainable alternative to wood-based paper.
Tear-resistant and foldable – You can crumple it, bend it, even soak it and it won’t wrinkle or rip.
Bleed-proof – Even when saturated with water, it won’t bleed through.
Crisp lines, saturated color – The bright white surface gives clean, vivid results with both wet and dry media.
Acid-free and archival – Your artwork stays bright and stable over time.

The only thing it doesn’t love? Oil-based paints and oil pastels. Those can interfere with its surface and texture. But for pretty much everything else (inks, watercolor, gouache, colored pencils, graphite, acrylics, and markers) it’s amazing.

How Artists Use It

Mineral Paper is the perfect playground for experimentation. It takes watercolor washes beautifully without warping, makes ink and alcohol marker work look crisp and punchy, and allows for wild mixed media layering. Try lifting or scraping wet paint, it responds more like film or vellum than traditional paper, giving you fresh creative control.

Because it’s waterproof and tear-resistant, it’s also great for outdoor sketching or plein air art (rain? spilled coffee? no problem). And printmakers, illustrators, and calligraphers all love it for its smooth glide and crisp ink definition.

We’ve seen artists do everything from collage and stencil work to hand-lettering and experimental printmaking on mineral paper, it’s the definition of an all-rounder.

Yasutomo has some wonderful Mineral Paper tutorials. In fact, there are 18 videos on their playlist taking you through everything from the fundamentals to origami.

Why We Keep It in Stock

We love materials that surprise people, and Mineral Paper is one of those “you have to feel it to believe it” supplies. Every time we demo it, someone goes, “Wait, this is made from rocks?” Yep. Rocks.

It’s durable, eco-friendly, and endlessly versatile, exactly the kind of art material that inspires curiosity. Whether you’re sketching, painting, layering, or testing something completely weird (we see you, experimental artists), this surface will keep up.
