DIY Envelopes

Store-bought envelopes get the job done. But they’re also kind of… predictable. Around here, we’re big fans of making the mundane magical. That’s why we’re diving head-first into the whimsical world of DIY envelopes—where paper choices are bold, folds are dramatic, and embellishments are strongly encouraged.

Grab some paper (plain, patterned, recycled, metallic—whatever your art stash is hoarding), and let’s get creating. Want a visual reference to go? Download our free tutorial.

The Classic Square Folded Envelope

What You’ll Need

  • A square sheet of paper (try a bold origami print, metallic shimmer, or textured paper for extra flair)
  • Glue stick or double-sided tape
  • Optional: contrasting paper for a liner

Steps

  1. Place your paper in a diamond position (point up).
  2. Fold the bottom corner up to just past the center.
  3. Fold each side corner in toward the center so they overlap slightly.
  4. Secure the overlaps with glue or tape.
  5. Fold the top flap down.

Add Flair
Cut a second, slightly smaller square of patterned paper and glue it inside before folding—instant custom liner. Think watercolor galaxy print inside kraft paper, or neon chevron peeking out of black cardstock.

The Heart-Shaped Envelope

What You’ll Need

  • Paper in any color or pattern (red, pink, or floral for sweet notes; black and gold for drama)
  • Pencil and scissors

Steps

  1. Cut a heart shape out of your paper (the wider, the better).
  2. Place it point-down.
  3. Fold the two rounded “lobes” inward so they meet in the middle.
  4. Fold the top down until it overlaps the side flaps.
  5. Fold the top point up to create the flap of the envelope.

Add Flair
Add a tiny bow to the closure, or stick a googly eye on each flap lobe to make it look like your envelope is judging you lovingly.

The Petal Envelope

What You’ll Need

  • Paper with a good fold memory (metallics, pearlescent, or heavyweight patterned)
  • A circular object to trace
  • Pencil and scissors

Steps

  1. Draw basic guidelines for a square centered on your paper.
  2. Trace around your circular object, so that there is a petal on each side of the square.
  3. Crease each petal by folding it toward the center.
  4. Using the creases as a guide, fold each petal inward and tuck to overlap.
  5. Secure with a sticker, wax seal, or decorative tape.

Add Flair
Use contrasting paper for each “petal” by tracing onto different paper styles, and gluing them back together before folding. Bonus points for patterns that reveal a secret image when opened.

Bonus: The Animal Envelope

What You’ll Need

  • Envelope base of your choice (square or rectangular works best)
  • Colored paper scraps
  • Scissors and glue
  • Googly eyes (mandatory, obviously)

Steps

  1. Choose your creature—fox, cat, owl, frog, unicorn… basically anything with a face.
  2. Use colored paper to cut out ears, beaks, whiskers, or whatever your critter needs.
  3. Glue the features onto the closed envelope flap so it becomes the “head.”
  4. Attach googly eyes, because life is better with googly eyes.

Add Flair
Use patterned paper for the animal body and metallic paper for details (like a gold unicorn horn or holographic frog belly). If you’re feeling ambitious, make a whole set—zoo mail, anyone?

Paper & Finishing Touches from ASC’s Stash

When it comes to envelope-making, the paper you choose makes all the difference. Our shelves are full of possibilities: crisp origami sheets for perfect folds and bold patterns, shimmering metallic cardstock for envelopes that catch the light, and even handmade paper for a natural, textured look that’s perfect for linings or petals. We’ve also got offcuts for fun, mismatched combinations and upcycled treasures like maps, sheet music, or old art prints for eco-friendly envelope magic.

Once your envelope is folded, the fun really begins. Dress it up with wax seals or stickers to keep it closed, wrap it in ribbon or twine for a gift-worthy touch, or stamp it with patterns (ink pads, hand-carved stamps, or even potato prints—no judgment here). Add layered paper cutouts for a 3D effect or go full ASC and stick on some googly eyes—because everything is better when it’s looking back at you.
