It came from sea snails. Thousands of them. And it smelled exactly as bad as you’d think.
Welcome back to Color Lab, where we slow down, pay attention, and get deeply weird about color. We’ve fallen in love with a single moody pigment (hi, Perylene Green), built a season out of six colors, and buried a tube of Mummy Brown in the metaphorical garden. Today we’re chasing a color that was once worth more than gold, reserved for emperors by actual law, and made through a process so foul that entire coastal cities were known by the stench: purple.
Specifically, Tyrian purple and the much-less-smelly modern violets that let us all wear, paint, and adore the color without keeping a vat of rotting shellfish in the backyard.
Buckle up. This one is gloriously gross.
What Was Tyrian Purple? (And Why Was It So Outrageously Expensive?)
Tyrian purple (also called royal purple or imperial purple) was a dye produced in the ancient Mediterranean, most famously by the Phoenicians in the city of Tyre (hence the name). And it came from one deeply unlucky source: sea snails. Specifically, several species of predatory marine snails in the Murex family.
Here’s the catch that made it so absurdly precious: each snail produced only a tiny amount of the dye precursor, secreted from a gland. To get a usable quantity of dye, you needed thousands of snails. By some estimates, somewhere in the ballpark of ten thousand snails to dye a single garment. The snails were cracked open, the glands extracted, and the whole mess left to stew and ferment in the sun for days.
The smell was legendary. Dye workshops were relegated to the edges of cities, and the workers reportedly carried the odor with them. The result, though? A rich, deep, colorfast purple that didn’t fade. It actually got more vivid with weathering and sunlight, which was unheard of. Fabric dyed with it was so valuable that, at points in Roman history, wearing purple was restricted by law to the emperor and a tiny elite. “Born to the purple” wasn’t a metaphor. It was a dress code with legal teeth.
Why Purple Was So Rare in the First Place
Here’s the nerdy part that makes the whole story click: purple is hard. For most of human history there simply was no good, stable, affordable purple. Plant-based purples faded fast. Mineral purples were scarce. The color sat at the far end of what nature was willing to hand over cheaply, which is exactly why it became shorthand for wealth and power. Not because of any inherent magic, but because making it reliably was genuinely, expensively difficult.
That scarcity held all the way until 1856, when an 18-year-old chemist named William Perkin, while trying to synthesize an anti-malaria drug, accidentally created the first synthetic purple dye: mauveine. Suddenly purple was cheap, abundant, and everywhere. The color of emperors became the color of, well, everyone and the floodgates opened for the synthetic pigment revolution that gives us our modern violets.
Swatching the Vibe (Snail-Free, We Promise)
Obviously we’re not cracking open ten thousand sea snails. But we can explore modern purples and violets that capture every bit of that rich, regal, complex energy with zero fermentation required. Here are our favorites to swatch:
Dioxazine Purple (PV23) — The powerhouse. A deep, intense, slightly blue-leaning violet with serious tinting strength (a little goes a long way). This is your closest spiritual heir to “imperial purple.” Dramatic, saturated, and luxurious. Watch out: it’s so strong it can take over a mix, so dilute and add gradually.
Perylene Violet (PV29) — The moody, sophisticated one. Far more muted and earthy than Dioxazine. Think dusty, brownish-violet, like a purple that’s seen some things. Beautiful for shadows, naturalistic work, and anyone who wants violet without the volume.
Quinacridone Violet / Quinacridone Magenta (PV19) — Our old friends from the Color Lab intro post make a return. These lean rosy and bright. Quinacridone Violet sits a touch cooler and bluer, Quinacridone Magenta hotter and pinker. Both are transparent, gorgeous in glazes, and absolute workhorses for mixing.
When you’re swatching these, pay attention to:
- Whether each leans warm (red/pink) or cool (blue) — this is the single most useful thing to know about a purple
- How they look as a thin wash vs. full strength (some, like Dioxazine, transform completely)
- How transparent they are when diluted
- Which ones stay vivid and which settle into muted, shadowy territory
Mixing Magic: Build Your Own Purple
Don’t have a tube of violet handy? You can mix a beautiful one and understanding how makes you a sharper colorist. The classic move:
Ultramarine Blue + a warm red gives you a rich purple, but here’s the pro tweak we love: Ultramarine Blue + Transparent Red Oxide. It sounds wrong (Transparent Red Oxide is an earthy, brownish red) but that’s exactly why it works. Instead of a candy-bright purple, you get a deep, complex, slightly muted violet that reads as sophisticated rather than loud. It’s the difference between a purple and a mood.
A few mixing notes:
- For vivid purples, you need a cool, blue-leaning red (like Quinacridone Magenta) plus blue. Warm reds (orange-leaning) make muddy purples — useful, but not vibrant.
- Add white and a purple shifts toward lavender; add a touch of its complement (yellow) and it grays down beautifully for natural shadows.
- The Ultramarine + Transparent Red Oxide combo is chef’s kiss for landscape shadows, stormy skies, and anything that wants depth without garishness.
Why This Story Matters (Beyond the Snails)
Tyrian purple is a wild footnote, but like every Color Lab story, it’s really about understanding why a color is the way it is. Purple was rare, so it meant power. It was hard to make, so it cost a fortune. The moment chemistry made it easy, its entire cultural meaning shifted.
Knowing this changes how you reach for the color. When you understand that violets range from the bombastic (Dioxazine) to the contemplative (Perylene) to the rosy (Quinacridone), you stop grabbing “purple” and start choosing the right purple for what you’re actually trying to say.
