Glue is one of those art supplies that seems simple until you actually need it to work. Then suddenly you’re standing in the adhesive aisle having an existential crisis because there are 12 different bottles that all say “multi-purpose” and none of them tell you whether they’ll turn your collage into a warped, wrinkled disaster.

Let’s talk glue science.
First: What Even Is Glue?
At its core, adhesive is just a material that creates a bond between two surfaces. How it does that (and how permanent, flexible, or invisible that bond ends up being) depends entirely on its chemistry.
Some glues work by evaporation (water or solvent leaves, glue hardens). Some work by chemical reaction (two parts mix and cure). Some never fully harden at all and stay tacky forever, which is either a feature or a nightmare depending on what you’re making.
The magic (or frustration) is all in the formulation.
The Big Categories: What You’re Actually Choosing Between
Water-Based Adhesives
These are your PVA glues (like white glue and wood glue), paste adhesives, and anything that dries by evaporation. Water-based glues are non-toxic, easy to clean up, and great for porous materials like paper, fabric, and wood.
The catch: They can cause paper to wrinkle or buckle because — surprise — they’re made of water. If you’re gluing thin or delicate paper, you need to apply sparingly or accept a little wave action.
Best for: Collage, bookbinding, wood projects, fabric, general crafting.
Solvent-Based Adhesives
Think rubber cement, spray adhesive, and contact cement. These use solvents (instead of water) as the carrier, which evaporate to leave a sticky polymer film behind.
The upside: They dry faster than water-based glues and won’t warp paper. The downside: Fumes. Ventilation is non-negotiable. Also, some solvent-based adhesives yellow over time, which matters if you’re doing archival work.
Best for: Paper that can’t handle moisture, temporary bonds (rubber cement is repositionable!), mounting work, and projects where you need a quick, flat bond.
Reactive Adhesives (Epoxies, Super Glue, Polyurethane)
These glues cure through a chemical reaction — not evaporation. Once they start curing, there’s no going back. They bond hard and often bond to surfaces that other glues can’t touch, like metal, glass, and plastic.
Super glue (cyanoacrylate): Bonds almost instantly. Amazing for small, precise repairs. Terrible for large surfaces or anything that needs flexibility. Also bonds skin. Ask us how we know.
Epoxy: Two-part system (resin + hardener). Incredibly strong, waterproof, and gap-filling. Takes time to cure but creates a bond that can outlast the materials it’s holding together.
Polyurethane glue (like Gorilla Glue): Expands as it cures, which is great for filling gaps but means you need clamps and cleanup skills.
Best for: Repairs, mixed-media sculpture, anything involving non-porous materials, outdoor projects.
Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives (Tape, Stickers, Sticky Notes)
These stay tacky indefinitely. They bond when you apply pressure, and the bond can often be reversed (to varying degrees of success).
Not technically “glue you squeeze out of a bottle,” but still worth understanding because the science is different and because sometimes tape is the right answer and we need to normalize that.
Best for: Temporary bonds, masking, hinging, anything you might want to reposition or remove later.
Matching Glue to Material: A Slightly Nerdy Breakdown
Not all glues stick to all things. Here’s why:
Porous vs. non-porous surfaces: Porous materials (paper, wood, fabric) absorb glue, which creates a mechanical bond. Non-porous materials (plastic, metal, glass) need glue that can chemically bond or create serious surface adhesion — that’s where reactive adhesives shine.
Flexibility: If your materials are going to bend, flex, or move, you need a glue that can move with them. Rigid bonds (like super glue or epoxy) will crack. Flexible bonds (like fabric glue or certain PVAs) won’t.
Archival concerns: If your work needs to last decades without yellowing, cracking, or deteriorating, stick to pH-neutral, archival-quality adhesives. Many solvent-based glues and cheap PVAs will break down or discolor over time.
The Glues We Get Asked About Most
Yes, but what about Nori paste?

It’s a traditional rice or wheat starch paste that’s been used in bookbinding and paper conservation for literal centuries. It’s archival, reversible, and gentle on delicate papers — but it requires a little more finesse than squeezing a bottle. Read more in our Nori Paste post.
Mod Podge: glue or sealant?
Both! It’s a PVA-based medium that works as an adhesive and a topcoat. Great for decoupage and mixed-media projects. Not ideal if you need a super-strong bond or archival quality.
Spray adhesive: when and why?
When you need an even, thin coat over a large area and don’t want moisture wrinkling your paper. Repositionable spray adhesive is a collage artist’s secret weapon. Just use it outside or in a well-ventilated space, because the fumes are real.
Glue stick vs. liquid glue?
Glue sticks are fast, clean, and less likely to wrinkle paper — but the bond isn’t as strong or as permanent. Liquid glue (especially PVA) creates a stronger bond but requires more drying time and technique to avoid buckling.
Pro Tips From the Glue Nerds (That’s Us)
Less is more. Seriously. Over-gluing causes wrinkles, seepage, and long drying times. A thin, even layer almost always works better than gooping it on.
Let it tack up. Some glues (like contact cement) work better if you let them sit for a minute before pressing surfaces together. Read the bottle. We know it’s boring. Do it anyway.
Clamp when you can. Pressure improves bond strength for most adhesives. You don’t need fancy clamps — books, jars, and your own body weight all work.
Test first. If you’re gluing something precious or unfamiliar, do a test on scrap material. Glue fails are heartbreaking and often irreversible.
Clean your squeeze bottles. Dried glue in the nozzle is the enemy of a good bead. Keep a damp cloth nearby and wipe the tip after every use.
The Most Important Thing (As Always)
The right glue is the one that matches your materials, your timeline, and your desired outcome. There is no one-size-fits-all. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or selling something.
